Environmental Sustainability

BSA is committed to sustainable and responsible tourism, and one of the ways we show our commitment is our sustainable approach to managing solid waste generated during all outings. This is done by segregating the wastes generated during our outings into three waste streams.
Food waste, Plastic Waste (Plastic bottles and reusable food packs), General waste.
November outing saw us creating environmental awareness by preaching the gospel of the 4Rs of waste Management and why it is important for everyone to play our part in ensuring environmental sustainability.
What are the 4Rs? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover. this
Reduce: This is consciously reducing the amount of waste we generate. A simple way to achieve this is by buying products with less packaging, another way could be by buying just enough so we don’t have to throw away so much leading to wastage.
Reuse: This could be refilling an empty pack or case for use or repurposing an item for a different use instead of throwing it away. Empty jars, bottles, shopping bags, refillable toners, and others not mentioned can be reused.
Recycle: After reducing, and reusing, but still have items to throw away. These items can be sorted or segregated into various waste streams and dropped at a collection centre or the recycling plant. Popular solid waste streams sorted for recycling are glass, plastic, paper, and cans.
Recover: The conversion of waste through thermal and biological means into resources (such as electricity, heat, compost, and fuel). This is done by properly sorting out items before taking them to specific recycling centres. Resource Recovery occurs after reduce, reuse and recycle have been attempted.

Why is this important?
Improper waste management can lead to environmental pollution, and pollution can lead to environmental degradation, ill health, and even death. But in playing our part individually, as organizations or even interest groups, we are making significant contributions towards environmental sustainability.

We have embedded sustainability principles into the way we operate since inception. Our sustainability strategy focuses on caring about the health and well-being of our community and educating our community on how their daily activities impact our environment and the climate at large with the aim to continually protect our environment. These are all in line with various UN sustainable development goals.
